What I do

Domestic electrical work across Canterbury CT1, CT2, CT3 and CT4. Consumer unit upgrades to the current BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2:2022 standard. Full-house and single-room rewires with the careful floorboard-lifting and listed-elevation conduit that Canterbury's mixed period stock requires. EICR periodic inspection and testing to the standard the private-rented mandate requires. EV charger installation on the domestic 7kW spec, with the DNO paperwork handled. Solar PV and battery on MCS-standard installs. LED and lighting work with the fire-hood and IC-F rating properly specified.

Six services. Everything scoped, fixed-priced, and closed out with a compliance certificate on any notifiable work.

Why Canterbury needs a Canterbury sparks

Canterbury holds around 1,800 listed buildings and 12 conservation areas administered by Canterbury City Council. The Cathedral precincts, Northgate, St Dunstan's, Wincheap Green and Bridge village all carry protected townscape - anything that changes the character of a listed elevation needs Listed Building Consent before the cable goes in. A contractor from Ashford or inland Kent will not know that without being told. I quote for LBC application timelines as part of the scope on protected properties, and I work with the Canterbury City Council conservation team as a routine part of the trade.

Outside the walls, the stock varies from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Wincheap and St Dunstan's to mid-C20th semis in Hales Place and Thanington to larger period cottages in Bridge and Chartham. Each brings its own board age, its own sub-main routing, and its own realistic scope. Landlord EICRs on the St Dunstan's HMOs. Consumer unit upgrades on the Hales Place original-fusebox stock. Careful conduit work in the intra-mural listed properties. Same trade; different jobs.

How I work

• Photos and postcode for an initial quote. I can give a fixed price for most straightforward jobs (consumer unit swap, EICR, EV charger) without coming out first. Rewires and larger scope usually need a site visit - free, no obligation.
• Fixed-price quotes. Once the scope is agreed the price is fixed. If the job runs longer than I expected - bad first-fix cable, awkward sub-main routing - that is my problem, not yours. No day-rate creep.
• Part P self-certification. Notifiable work (consumer units, new circuits, bathrooms) is self-certified through a Competent Person Scheme. The Building Regulations compliance certificate lands on your doormat inside a fortnight.
• Test readings on every certificated job. Ze, Zs, insulation resistance, RCD trip times - recorded on the EIC and left with you. Useful for future EICRs and future owner conveyancing.
• Listed and CA work with LBC application. Where the job affects a listed elevation, I file the Listed Building Consent application with Canterbury City Council conservation team and quote for the 6–8 week timeline as part of the scope.
• Bank transfer or card. Invoice or receipt either way.

What I don't do

• Invent C2 findings on EICRs to generate remedial work. The trade has a reputation for this. I do not do it.
• Fit non-fire-rated downlights to first-floor ceilings. Approved Document B is not optional.
• Skip Part P notification on jobs that need it. The compliance certificate is what your future buyer's solicitor will ask for.
• Talk you into an oversized solar or battery system. I quote against your actual half-hourly usage, not against a hypothetical worst case.

• Compliance certificate on every notifiable job. Part P self-certified within a fortnight of completion.
• Fixed-price quotes. Once agreed, the price is the price.
• Photos and readings on completion. Every job leaves you with a photo record of what was done, and every notifiable job leaves you with the test readings on the certificate.
• 10-year workmanship guarantee. Every installation and fix is covered for ten years. If something I fitted fails through poor workmanship, I come back and put it right at no charge.

Canterbury Electrical is a trading name of NordSys Limited (company registration handled centrally). Richard Lim, founder. The nordsys.co.uk stable also operates a small number of other Kent-focused local-service brands. Each is run individually, to the same operating standard.
