The clean job. OZEV-approved 7kW smart charger on a dedicated 32A single-phase circuit, Type A or Type B RCD protection, DNO notified. Smart-charger compliant with the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.
The original OZEV Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) closed to new homeowner applications in April 2022. Since then the grant is restricted to:
Homeowners with off-street parking who own the freehold do not currently qualify for grant. If you sit inside one of the eligible categories I file the OZEV paperwork as part of the job.
Victorian terraces with no driveway. An EV charger install is not viable without off-street parking - even if you could route the cable to the pavement, the OZEV compliance and the DNO both require the charge point to be on private land, not overhanging the highway. Some Canterbury terraces on Wincheap and St Dunstan's have small rear driveways or side alleys off-street where an install is possible.
Hales Place, Thanington, new-build Thanington Park. Straightforward installs - usually side-wall route from the consumer unit under the eaves to the charger position at the front-parking bay.
CT4 village properties. Longer cable runs, sometimes 20–30m from the internal sub-main to the charger, so cable-sizing calculation matters. Voltage drop across the run needs to stay inside 5% at full 32A load.
Listed properties. The charger itself, and any surface cable route across a listed elevation, needs Listed Building Consent. Canterbury City Council are generally supportive of EV charging installs on listed properties provided the fittings are unobtrusive (dark colour, low-profile unit, cable route via a rear elevation not the front face).
For a UK 7kW home charge, no. Any Type 2 socket charger from an OZEV-approved manufacturer will charge every current EV sold in the UK. The Type A vs Type B RCD choice depends on the vehicle: most modern EVs are fine with the Type A protection built into the charger, but some older Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe and specific plug-in hybrid models produce DC leakage current that requires Type B - I'll ask the vehicle model at quote stage.
On a domestic 100A single-phase supply, two 32A chargers is 64A of charging load alone, which limits everything else in the house. Load-management works but with a Type B or three-phase upgrade needed if both cars want to charge at 7kW simultaneously. Practical answer: one 7kW charger with a switching cable, or split load-management between two chargers each capped at 3.6kW.
Standard EV charger install on a Canterbury property with modern consumer unit and headroom in the 100A supply: £720 – £950. Longer cable runs (CT4 villages), listed properties requiring LBC, load-management on a 60A supply, or Type B RCD spec push higher. OZEV grant deducted from the price where eligible.
