Fusebox red flags in older Canterbury houses
Wylex plug-in ceramic-fuse boards, single-RCD 17th-Edition boards, missing main bonds. What an EICR calls C1 versus C2 versus C3, and which of them means the board comes out this week rather than next year.
The fusebox is the most-diagnostic single object in a Canterbury property. Its age and type tells the electrician most of what they need to know about the state of the installation before they open a single accessory. Here is what to look for on an older Canterbury property, and what the EICR codings mean for the priority of the work.
The obvious ones - Category C1 (immediate)
These fuseboards are still surprisingly common in properties that have not been rewired since the 1970s:
- Wylex plug-in wooden-backed board. Rewireable ceramic fuses, no MCB protection, no RCD protection. When a fuse-carrier is withdrawn the live meter tails are exposed inside the board. Category C1 on any modern EICR - code for "danger present, requires immediate remedial work". Common in unmodernised Wincheap terraces and older Hales Place semis.
- Board with no main earth to the CU. A visual find, checked with a continuity meter. Some pre-1970s installs relied on the water pipe for the main earth; if that pipe was later replaced with plastic (which is now common), the earth path is broken and the installation has no reliable earth. Category C1.
- Wrong-polarity meter tails on a metal-clad board. Rare, but I have seen it on a couple of Canterbury properties where a supply was rewired without checking. If the neutral becomes the phase, the whole metal enclosure becomes live. Category C1.
C1 findings mean the installation is dangerous now, not that it will be dangerous. The Regulations require remedial action within days, and any landlord with a C1 on the EICR is legally required to remediate within 28 days at most.
The near-obsolete - Category C2 (potentially dangerous)
These are compliant when they were installed but no longer meet current safety expectations:
- Wylex Standard MCB board. MCBs replaced the ceramic fuses, but there is no RCD protection. A fault on a socket circuit (e.g. a damaged extension lead) can leave 230V present on a metal appliance case until the MCB happens to trip on overload - which it might not. Category C2.
- MEM Memera board. Same story. MCBs but no RCD. Common in 1970s-and-80s Hales Place and Thanington stock.
- Single-RCD split-load boards without RCD on all socket circuits. Older split-load boards sometimes have the ring main protected by RCD but socket circuits on the ground floor unprotected. Category C2 if any socket circuit that can reasonably serve outdoor equipment is not RCD-protected.
- Missing or undersized main bond to gas or water. Main bonds should be 10mm² or 16mm² depending on supply type. Bonds of 6mm² or (rarely) no bond at all still exist on some pre-2000 installations. Category C2.
C2 findings mean the installation is compliant with the standard of the day but a single-fault condition could create danger. Remediation within 28 days for private-rented properties; strongly recommended for owner-occupied.
The improvement-flags - Category C3 (recommended)
These are current-standard compliance improvements that do not fail the EICR:
- Plastic-enclosed 17th-Edition split-load board in a habitable space. Since Amendment 3 in 2015, new domestic boards inside habitable spaces must be metal-enclosed. An older plastic-enclosed board in a hallway cupboard is treated as end-of-life on renewal but not automatically failed today. Category C3.
- No Type 2 SPD. A2 requires an SPD on new installs unless risk-assessed out. On an older installation, absence of SPD is a C3.
- No AFDD on socket circuits. AFDDs are recommended but not required on standard domestic. C3.
The Canterbury pattern
By area, the fusebox age story looks like this:
- Wincheap, St Dunstan's Victorian terraces. A wide range. Some have been rewired in the last 15 years with modern boards; some still on Wylex Standard. EICR outcomes bimodal - half satisfactory, half failing on the board.
- Hales Place, Thanington C20th semis. Almost universally on original 1970s/80s boards. C2 fusebox is the near-default finding. Consumer unit upgrade is the answer.
- Bridge, Chartham cottages. More variable. Some have had modern electrical work; some have not been touched since the 1960s. Sub-mains from meter to board are often undersized against current PSCC.
- Intra-mural listed cottages. Often on modern boards installed as part of a mid-2000s LBC-approved rewire, but the sub-main routing behind the modern board is sometimes pre-war rubber-insulated cable that needs replacing.
What replacement looks like
The current standard is a metal-enclosed consumer unit, all-RCBO configuration, with a Type 2 SPD fitted. The install takes half a day on site once the DNO has cut the tails, and the compliance certificate is posted to you within a fortnight of completion.
