The village on the north-west edge of Canterbury, backed by the ancient Blean Woods NNR. Older cottages with rural sub-mains and the occasional chalk substrate that makes earth-rod driving unpredictable.
Blean is where the property mix widens. Period cottages along the Blean Common Road, converted farm outbuildings on the fringes, and the modern estate stock on the university side. The workload is dominated by sub-main routing and outbuilding circuits: a barn-conversion office in a converted stable, a workshop in an outbuilding needing an SWA sub-main from the main consumer unit, or a garden studio with its own sub-consumer-unit.
The chalk-and-flint substrate on the Blean woodland-edge properties makes earth-rod driving unpredictable. On plots where the required earth resistance cannot be achieved with a single rod, either a rod-in-well arrangement or (more commonly on rural TT installations) an earth-mat is the answer, with periodic verification of the earth-electrode resistance built into the maintenance schedule.
Blean is not itself a conservation area, but Blean Woods is a National Nature Reserve with SSSI status - any cable routing across NNR land is a separate consent conversation with Natural England.
