LED downlights, fire hoods and thermal cutout

The fire-hood rating your downlights need under Approved Document B, the insulation-contact rating that stops thermal cutout tripping, and why Hales Place loft-insulated bungalows need IC-F fittings specifically.

Retrofit LED downlights are the most common lighting job on my Canterbury round. They look simple. The compliance path is not.

Fire rating: Approved Document B

Approved Document B (fire safety) requires ceilings between floors, and between habitable spaces and adjacent higher-risk spaces (loft, garage), to hold a defined fire resistance - typically 30 or 60 minutes. A downlight cut through the ceiling creates a hole in that fire barrier. Without a fire hood, the hole reduces the fire resistance of the ceiling to zero at the point of the cut. Multiply that by six downlights in a kitchen ceiling and the whole ceiling has effectively lost its rating.

A fire-hood-rated downlight uses an intumescent seal around the fitting that expands under heat and closes the hole. The rating is quoted in minutes: 30-minute, 60-minute, 90-minute.

Every LED downlight I install carries the correct fire rating for its position. Uncertified £3 downlights that flood the ceiling with light but no compliance are a hard no.

IC-rating: insulation contact

Loft insulation in modern houses is thick (150–400mm of glasswool or PIR). A ceiling-recessed downlight sitting in a bedroom ceiling has that insulation potentially pressed down over it from above. Without insulation-contact rating, the downlight overheats - the LED driver runs above its rated temperature, the thermal cutout trips, and the light goes intermittent.

IC-rated fittings are designed to shed heat efficiently and tolerate direct insulation contact:

Non-IC fittings under thick loft insulation is a common Canterbury fail. On Hales Place, Thanington and the new-build Thanington Park stock, loft insulation exceeds 300mm in most properties. IC-F fittings are the only correct spec for first-floor ceiling downlights on any of that stock.

Dimmer compatibility

LED loads are non-linear. Traditional leading-edge dimmers (designed for halogen and incandescent loads) misfire the drive to LED drivers, causing flickering, buzzing, and shortened LED life. Trailing-edge dimmers (also called ELV dimmers) drive LED loads cleanly.

On a retrofit, the dimmer at the switch position usually needs replacing at the same time as the fitting. I fit compatible trailing-edge dimmers as standard and test the response on the actual LED load before signing off. Where existing leading-edge dimmers are left in place, the LED-load complaint is a matter of time.

Bathroom downlights: Section 701

Bathroom lighting is BS 7671 Section 701 zone-controlled. A downlight in a bathroom ceiling sits in Zone 1 or Zone 2 depending on the position relative to the bath or shower:

All bathroom downlights I install carry both the fire rating and the IPX rating for their zone. All bathroom work is notifiable under Part P (bathrooms are a special location) and is self-certified through my Competent Person Scheme registration.
